Justin Vogel photographydirty blog - photographers
Justin Vogel is a Street Photographer. Even worse, he is a Flickr photographer. He is neither embarrassed nor ashamed of that fact, despite whatever implications it might have in the greater photographic community. Born and still alive in NYC, Justin came of age in the hardcore punk scene of new york's lower east side. In the mid 1980's, as a high school student, he gravitated towards shooting Street instinctively, unaware that such a genre even existed. After taking a few photography courses in college, other interests prevailed, and he eventually decided photography wasn't for him. It wasn't until he stumbled upon Flickr, four years ago, that he started making pictures seriously again. He drew his inspiration from the same Streets he shot 26 years earlier, and although he has mellowed out a lot over the years, it is thru the prism of hardcore punk that his vision of the Street and his approach to photography are filtered.
These days, when he is not trolling the lower parts of Manhattan for shit to shoot, he is raising a young child in the lifestyle to which he has grown accustomed. And while child rearing eats up a large amount of his free time, he still manages to find time to administrate the renowned and reviled Hardcore Street Photography group on flickr and is among the newest members of the Strange.rs photography collective. His motivation to continue working within the limits of SP come from a passion for the genre and a respect for those that came before him. Still, he considers himself a novice, and recognizes that his best work is still 5 to 10 years down the line, Ultimately, he hopes that 25 years from now he will leave behind a portfolio of images that will fit comfortably among the canon of SP masters. Although, obviously only time will tell.
If any of this sounds strange or disjointed it is because Justin Vogel feels very uncomfortable referring to himself in the 3rd person.
