Ours to Do With

Colorado is evolving. It is happening fast and causing enormous divisions. Marijuana is legal.

The Aurora shootings incited outrage, new gun laws, and a right-wing recall of two anti-gun senators.Boulder is socialist asshole liberals, Colorado Springs is nutty right-wing conservatives.Northern Colorado is attempting to secede from everybody else.

I have never seen my state so polarized. The North Fork Valley is a small community on the western slope. Farmers, miners, ranchers, hippies, and hunters reside here. I see the contradictions of Colorado contained in one, tiny valley. Because they live together, they actually have to rub elbows when they come to town.

I grew up in the suburbs. I am an outsider in a rural environment. I photograph my curiosity, wonder, confusion, and fascination to tell the stories of this community. Strong in the traditions of the American West, it is also downright weird in the way that only small towns can be. It is a modern microcosm of my home state, evolving along with the rest of us while fiercely defining and redefining a contemporary rural western identity.

Fallen

These photographs are part of a wider project called "Fallen" which i started in 2009.

The project is focusing on that particular situation when the human being has lost his / her Grace.

My purpose is to point out this condition and by using humour as a key factor of these photos, to show the existence of hope, not caring about the reasons that led to this condition.

Judgment of Minos

This set is a tribute to the bourgeois conception of death.
Fear of pain, fear of postmortem punishment, fear of darkness, fear of the unknown, fear for the stranger makes people think and act abnormal.
For me, being scared to death, means that you pass the day without living it. Photos are taken at various places of island of Crete, the land of King Minos.
After the death of King Minos, Zeus did him "Judge of the Dead"

The Warp and the Woof

Somebody once commented on one of these shots 'hmm... too much going on here, it's difficult to make something out of it' and my immediate response was 'I have the same problem with my life'.
They're messy. They don't have an obvious point; no punchline. Although carefully considered, they lack an immediate graphic clarity and aren't about any of the formal aspects - color, line, etc. They aren't quick reads. I don't particularly connect with images that are simple and elegant distillations because my world isn't like that.
Two of my inspirations for this work are Faulkner and Pollock, one for his page-long unpunctuated sentences, the other for his dense visual matrices. Both artists intend to slow you down, suck you in, and reveal a wealth of detail and association. Any one of which may, or may not, be vitally important to seeing the whole, but hopefully each little bit is worth savoring.
These images are part of an open-ended set I began developing about two years ago. Eventually I may have enough to build a book around, which I intend to call The Warp and the Woof. The terms come from weaving, and name the vertical and lateral strands in a loom, respectively. This is meant to draw an association between lives of individuals as linear threads, and the fabric they weave of culture and society. The thing is, in the case of people as threads, no two ever run exactly parallel - that's how the Fates set it up.

Still Going

I believe that a photograph is interesting when instead of increasing our knowledge of the world, succeeds to alter our respective perceptions of it. The smaller the difference, the more intense is the effect. From this viewpoint and within the limitations of the medium, the photographer is an author who creates a fiction in close proximity to reality. The world photographed should appear both familiar and strange at the same time. In this series of photos I want to explore not the unspecified event but the human expression as a response to that event by turning my camera away and towards the crowd.

In this sense the series has an almost conceptual framework intensified by the repetition of form however it remains firmly rooted in the street-documentary spirit. Despite the nature of the project that calls for consistency rather than great stand alone pictures, I wanted most photographs to embrace a shared moment between the photographer and the subject, a kind of intimacy that might last all of a split of a second yet is timeless all the same. Capturing my subject’s unguarded moments from a very close distance, these are direct but non-confrontational shots with an attempt to keep the tone as calm and warm as possible. At the same time I was seeking to feel and convey that special tension that occurs when, confronting a line-up of people looking towards an implied spectacle, the visual connection is momentarily suspended, and the photographer (and consequently the viewer of the photograph) comes to take its place.

Third worlds

After many years of walking around as a "flâneur" in my own city Buenos Aires (and after in Czech Republic and France) using my camera as a tool to get related with people and the city without knowing exactly what I was looking for, I realized that after the taxonomy of my work I could find the meaning of it. Because, what is a photographer more than a collector of images?
That's how I started to find out which were my interests. In general, I am attracted to the relationship between the subject and the space. Sometimes it is an architectural approach where there is a lack of human activity and sometimes is completely the opposite, the subject verbs the object.
I have been working around this topic for the last 5 years creating different activities or how I like to call them: games.
Each game has it's own rule and I try to change them so I can always have a fresh and new approach.
For example I just follow someone on the street and I let him take me to places that I don't know. Normally I don't take pictures of the subject, I just let him be an excuse bring me to where I am.
I know a piece is done when I let the person go or when I get interested in someone else

Black Swan

Black Swan is a theory based on the statement "all swans are white."
So it's rare and unpredictable whether you'll see a black swan.
Properties of a Black Swan are :

1 - difficult to predict
2 - high consequence
3 - seems predictable afterward

First I must admit that I’ve been amused with this too serious economic’s metaphor.
And on the other hand I’ve always been interested in weird moments.
We are not perfect, we are not imperfect.
For most of the time the way we act is just in-between.
I like to show this interstice in our attitudes, that serve as a witness of our humanity.
So I built Black swan as an ongoing collection of unexpected gesture.

As New York City’s residents are casually thrown together in the daily churn, you can almost hear the quiet thumps of their personal protective bubbles colliding.

Marooned

I've been living in Korea for over 10 years and started shooting about 4 years into it.
Marooned is a way for me to try an capture some form of beauty in what is really not at first glance a beautiful city, Seoul.

After the 2012 calendar , a new calendar will be edited through a different process:

Submissions are open, the subject is free and based on candid  photos of people or animals or anything else

( you can call it candid photos or street photos or unposed photos or whatever )

The submissions must be part of a project, not just some irrelevant "best of" photos.

Every submitted project will be added with a single thumbnail in this topic, together with its title, name and link of the photographer and social media buttons.

After the submissions will close ( ending date 31 October 2013 ),   they will be reviewed and voted by :

Each admin will vote for 12 projects, one for each month.

The 12 finalist submissions that will be selected :
  • will be fully featured in this topic (all photos of the project + description + links) and featured through a single thumbnail banner inside the footer of every blog post here, one project per each month of 2014.

Additionally the the photographers of the first 3 most highly scored projects :
  • will be together with me the next calendar's admins.  (The next calendar submission will (hopefully) take place after 2-3 years)
  • will receive a 14 photos' series of 10*15 cm prints of mine, part of 2012's "CIVITAS RETHYMNAE" exhibition.

Additionally the photographer of the project that will get the highest score :
  • will have a feature in the photographer's topic
  • will have a single thumbnail banner linked to his feature inside the footer of every blog post for 2015
  • will receive a 30*45 cm signed print of any photo of mine he-she may choose.
(if the winner is already presented in the photographer's topic , then he-she will simply get the banner and the photo and the feature on the topic will go to the 2nd winner).

The votes of each admin will count :

1st choice : 12 points
2nd choice : 11 points
and so on until ..
12th choice :  1 point

--->   The maximum points a project can get is 4 * 12 = 48 points

For some inspiration press the "FAV" button under each admin's thumbnail to take a look at flickr favorites of them.

(In case of same score between two or more photographers the total number of facebook  likes and tweets under the submitted projects here will clear the rank .
The like and tweet buttons under every photo will refer to the website link of the photographer who submitted a project.
The initial admin votes won't have any relationship with the number of likes and tweets )

The results will be announced here in January 2014 with the 12th project, then in February with the 11th and so on .. until December 2014 that the winning project will be announced.

Submissions instructions :

Send an email to      dirtyblog.calendar@gmail.com       and attach in it :

  • The project's title and 6 photos
( photos : 500 pxls the long size , 72 dpi , colour or black and white. No watermarks , no montage , no HDR , no heavy digital process etc )
  • A brief description of the project : you can mention how, why, when ,where etc or simply whatever you 'd like to say about the project and its photos
  • Your name and a link of your website ( if you have a website put that link, if not then put a flickr or tumblr link )

You will receive an email reply when your submission is received and afterwards it wil be posted here as described before.
